He was a Revolutionary soldier. Enlisted in a volunteer companyraised in North Yarmouth and vicinity, on a requisition of thegovernment for a draft. Joined Col. French's Regiment atCambridge. Ordered to Winter Hill and to Dorchester and wasstationed at Dorchester Hills until discharged in April, 1776.Enlisted in June, 1776, in a company of volunteers in NorthYarmouth and vicinity to go to Lake Champlain. Joined thecompany at Scarborough; marched to Dorchester and was in theregiment of Colonel Francis. Marched under Colonel Willard ofLunenburg through Watertown, Lunenburg, Chesterfield, N. H.,Bennington, Vt., to Skeensborough, "where we took shipping forTiconderoga." Stationed at Mt. Hope, where he was dischargedNov. 27. Arrived at home Dec. 7, 1776.In 1780-81, enlisted at Marblehead, Mass., on board the sloop"Thom" of 60 guns and about 140 men, commanded by Capt. Samuel Tucker.Cruised about a month in the Bay of Chaleur, where their vesselwas captured by the British frigate "Hinds," Captain Young,commander, and carried first to St. John's Island, then toHalifax and imprisoned on board a guard ship. He and four othersescaped by swimming half a mile to the shore on a dark night,where they took a boat and returned home by water, arriving thelatter part of August. Jesse Soule lived in the place of hisbirth until nine years of age, when his father moved to NorthYarmouth. He applied for pension Oct. 12, 1832. His claim wasallowed and his certificate issued May 3, 1832. Residence attime of application, North Yarmouth. He died Jan. 29, 1842, andhis widow applied for pension, aged 80 years, and her claim wasgranted. He was born on Long Island, in Casco Bay, June 2, 1759.Jedediah Soule of Freeport, Me., aged 81 years in 1832,testified he was brother of Jesse Soule and was knowing to his service in CaptainBaston's Company. Jonathan Soule of Freeport, Me., aged 75 years in 1832,testified that he was knowing to his brother Jesse Soule'sservice and that a few days after his return he, Jonathan, wasdrafted to go to Peekskill, N. Y. James Soule of Freeport, Me., 78 years of age in 1832, testifiedthat in 1776 he was a soldier stationed at Fort Independence andthat his brother, Jesse, came there in Captain Wentworth'sCompany; and they often saw each other.
