Narrative

In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries it was not uncommon togive a child the name of a living elder brother, possibly insome cases at the request of a godfather who wished the baby tobear his own name.John Hatche the Younger, of Sellinge, was born about the year1495. By the will of his father he succeeded to lands andtenements including a "new house" in Sellinge. The name of hiswife is unknown.John Hatche, of Sellinge, beside Horton Monks, made his willApril 13, 1535, and it was proved April 26, 1536. To be buriedin the churchyard at Sellynge. To every godchild 12d. To everyof my children two ewes. To my wife two kine, two hogs, sixewes, and half my household stuff. The residue of my goods to besold to pay my debts and legacies by my executors, my wife andThomas Marchall, to whom I give 6s. 8d. apiece. To John Marshall3s. 4d. to help my wife with the writings. Witnesses: ThomasDylnott the younger, Robert Cavell and Richard Hempsted. My lastwill regarding my lands. A piece of land called Mewlyng and mymill beside Hythe to be sold, and the money, and also £9. 20d.which Thomas Dylnott owes me, to be used to pay my debts andlegacies. Hodyforth mill and half the meadow to be put to farmand the money used for the same purpose. My sons Thomas, John,and Stephen into my new house and lands at their ages of twentyyears. My wife to have the other half of the meadows by thenames of Lytle Somerlies, greate Somerles, and Rayfelde until mychildren by twenty years of age, giving to each his share as heattains that age. To her also for life the house and lands atSomerfield, with reversion at her death to my children. If allmy sons die under age, reversion to my daughters, the landsbeing equally divided. To each daughter 40s. at marriage. If allmy children die, the money to be used to have an obit kept fortwenty years, and the land to be sold and the money to go to mybrothers and their heirs. To Thomas Hatche, sone of John Hatchethe elder, 13s. 4d. Overseer: Maister Hayman, to who I give 6s.8d.
