Thomas Hache, of Sellinge, co. Kent, was probably born about theyear 1465. He held the manor of Hodyford and was assessed as"Thomas Hatche the elder" in the Hundred of Street in thesubsidy of 1524. The name of his wife is not found. (The Englishancestry of the Hatch family was thoroughly worked out byElizabeth French (Mrs. J. Gardner Bartlett) and was printed inan article in the New England Historical and GenealogicalRegister, 70:245, from which this account is abstracted.Thomas Hache was very probably a grandson of John at Hecche ofSellinge next Monks Horton who made his will November 15, 1464.He gave the residue of his goods to his wife Agnes and his sonThomas and named them executors. The woods upon his lands atWestwell and Charing were to be sold to pay his debts. HisFeoffees, William Knight, John Parys, William Smyth, John Webbeand William at Melle were to permit Agnes, his wife, to hold allhis other lands and tenements until his son Thomas came of ageof twenty-four years when he was to have one-third if the lands.His sons John and William were likewise each to have one-thirdwhen they reached that age, when the feoffees were to make overthe land to the three sons equally, they paying to Agnes theirmother 20 s. annually for life. If all the sons should diebefore reaching twenty-four, Agnes was to have the lands forlife, and after her death they were to be sold and the moneyemployed to provide a chantry priest to sing and pray in thechurch of Selling for two years, the residue to be expended incharity, for the souls of his father and mother and all thefaithful departed. To each of the feoffes for their pains, 6s.8d.John at Hecche was undoubtedly descended from a family of AtteHacches of the Hundred of Calehill, which contains the parishesof Westwell and Charing in which lived others of the namecontemporaneously with John at Hecche of Selling.The will of Thomas Hache the elder of Sellinge beside HortonMonkyn was made December 12, 1530, and proved Dec. 31, 1534. Hedirects that he be buried in the churchyard of Sellynge. Toevery godchild 6 d. To Thomas Hache, son of John and ElionerHache, 40 s., 20 d. at the age of twenty-four and 20 s. at theage of twenty-five to be paid by my son John. If the said Thomasdie within age without heirs then it is to be paid to his sisterAgnes, and if she die within age without heirs, reversion to myson John. To my son John, my best brass pot. To my daughtersAgnes, Margarete, and Alice 6s.8d. apiece. To my son William alldebts he owes me and two silver spoons and to his daughter AgnesHache 6s. 8d. To Agnes, daughter of John Hache the elder my son,now dead, 6s. 8d. To Thomas Hache, John Hache the younger,Johanne Hache, Agnes Hache, and Alice Hache, sons and daughtersof John Hache, 6s. 8d. apiece. Residuary legatee and executor:son John Hache. To William Hache my son my manorof Hodyford and all those parcels of land, viz., Hodyford Brokelying in three parcels, a parcel called Horselife, one calledHodyford grove, etc. To my son John Hache my new house with thelands thereto belonging and all my other lands and tenements inSellyng, he paying therefor to Thomas Hache, son of John Hachelate of Sellyng, deceased, 40 marks as before specified.
