Hunting, a resident of Lockport and a member of the barfor nearly half a century, is a son of Edward and Margaret(Kruver) Hunting. and was born in Ulster county, New York,October 29, 1814. His paternal grandfather, Dr. Edward Hunting, was a native of England where he practiced medicine for severalyears, and then came to New York abouth the opening of theRevolutionary War. His son , Edward Hunting (father), was bornin Ulster county in 1778, and at about thirty-eight years of ageremoved to Tompkins county, where he died in 1861, in theeighty-third year of his age. He was a farmer by occupation, and was drafted in the war of 1812 but procured a substitute. He was a Methodist in religious belief and church membership, while in political faith he had been originally a demorcrat, butwhen Fremont ran he voted for him and soon became a strongabolitionist. His wife, Margaret Kruver, a native of Ulstercounty and of German descent, bore him seven children, of whomtwo are living: Catherine, widow of a Mr. Jagger of Cortlandcounty, where she now resides; and Moses S Hunting. Another sonIsrael Hunting, was a retired farmer living at Fond du Lac,Wisconsin , and died September 14, 1891, in the eighty-fourthyear of his age.Moses S Hunting grew to manhood on the farm, and atteneded thepublic schools of that day. He entered Hamilton college, fromwhich he was graduated in the class of 1888. After graduationhe read law with Horatio Ballard, of Cortland, and George CBeers, of Ithaca, New York, and was admitted to the bar in May1842. In that year he opened an office at Farmerville, inSeneca county, where he practiced successfully for seven years. He then came to Niagara county, where he purchased a farm, andwas engaged for fifteen years in farming and practicing hisprofession. At the end of that time, in 1864, he came toLockport, where he has remained ever since in active practice. He hives due attention and careful consideration to all of hiscases, never neglects his client's interests, and enjos a vergood practice. Besides real estate and other property in thiscounty, he has real estate interests in the great city ofChicago. In political belief Mr Hunting is a straight democratwho believes that the supremacy of American institutions, andthe successful upholding of our National honor will be bestattained under democratic administrations. Aside from his legalwork to which he gives nearly all of his time he once and onlyonce, allowed the use of his name as a candidate for the officeof school commissioner, to which he was elected by a goodmajorit. Though taking a deep interest in political matters heis strongly averse to running for office, on account of themethods resorted to by candidates. On June 5, 1845, Mr Hunting married Josephine G Goodwin, whodied in 1884. To them were born four children, two sons and twodaughters; Matilda, (deceased); Ben Johnson (now dead), who wasa graduate of Cornell university, and after entering upon thepractice of law served one term as district attorney of Niagaracounty; C. Hunting, your maternalgrandfather. When I commenced the study of the law in Lockportin 1885. He was one of the older members of the Bar, quite afine looking old gentleman with white curly hair, who was stillvery vehement in his addresses to the jury, quoting Shakespeareand the classics and waiving his arms and gesticulating in themanner of the advocate of that day - a school that was passingaway. He must have been an excellent lawyer in his time.Associated with him in business was his son, Benjamin J. Hunting- also a trial lawyer who was District Attorney of the County ofNiagara 1877-1880. In the files of the Niagara County Clerk's Office are found thecensus reports for this city as of June 1, 1865. On Page eightof the volume of that report appears the following: Moses S. Hunting, Lawyer, age 47Josephine " wife age 40Matilda " child age 19Benjamin " child age 17Fred " child age 15Cornelia " child age 10It also appears from the records that Moses S Hunting andJosephine G. his wife conveyed various pieces of land so thatyou can establish another point of identification here with yourgrandmother - the G. in her name undoubtedly standing for"Goodwin"........I am told, although I have not yet verified the fact, that the Hunting burial lot is in Glenwood Cemetery in thiscity....Moses S. Hunting and his son, Benjamin J. died many years agoand I presume Mrs. Hunting also died because when I knew MosesS. Hunting he was a widower. I also recall that my aunt who wasprincipal of an Intermediate School in this city for somethinglike over fifty years was very fond of a particularly bright andbeautiful girl who attended her school known as "Cornie"Hunting, who must have been the Cornelia who appears in thecensus report. She died a school girl.....the Hunting name does not appear in the (Lockport) directoryof 1859 and 1860.October 13th, 1933Madam:....I have learned that the markers on the Hunting lot inGlenwood Cemetery contain the following inscriptions:Moses S. Hunting, born 1814 died 1885Mattie Reynolds died 1885 age 38Cornie Hunting died 1873 age 17Benjamin Hunting died 1886 age 36These dates correspond with the Census report except that what Iread as "47" should have been "41".October 18th, 1933Dear Miss Reynolds:I was in the Grosvenor Library at Buffalo yesterday and ranacross the brief biographical sketch of Moses S. Hunting in theBiographical and Portrait Cyc. of Niagara County published in1892.It stated that he was the son of Edward and Margaret (Kruver)Hunting and was born in Ulster County, N.Y. October 29th, 1814.He was a graduate of Hamilton College in the class of '38,admitted to the Bar in 1842, came to Niagara County in 1849 andpurchased and operated a farm for some years. Moved intoLockport in 1864 and opened a law office there. On Jone 5th,1845 he married Josephine G. Goodwin, who died in 1884.Sources:1. "Landmarks of Niagara Co NY Wm Poole 18972.
