Narrative

From: dean@cs.cornell.edu (Dean B. Krafft)I believe that I've identified the Dr. Edward Hunting who wasthe father ofEdward Hunting, born 1778 in Ulster Co., NY. The key is a booktitled "EastHampton History, Including Genealogies of Early Families" byJeannetteEdwards Rattray, Country Life Press, Garden City, NY, 1953. Inparticular,in Chapter 12 "From Purge to Penicillin" she describes thehistory ofmedical practice in the town. On the bottom of page 85 and topof page 86 isthe following paragraph:"Edward Huntting, the second son of Rev. Nathaniel Huntting, wasa graduate of Harvard in 1725, and is mentioned in the TownRecords as Dr. Huntting, as is his son Edward who was born in1741. The first Dr. Edward died at the age of 40, and his sonremoved to Fishkill, N.Y., and it is doubtful if he everpracticed in East Hampton."Fishkill, NY in Dutchess County is a stone's throw (if you havea reallystrong arm) from Ulster County. In the section on genealogies(p. 398) shelists the following (note that numbers are generations with JohnHunting/Hester Seaborne being 1):"Dr. Edward [Huntting] 4 [son of Rev. Nathaniel Huntting b. Nov15, 1675,Dedham, MA] b. 1704, d. April 1745, a graduate of Harvard and aphysician,he m. Dec. 16, 1730, Mercy, dau. Isaac Mulford; ch. Mercy 5, b.1731 (who m. Thomas Wickham;) Isaac Mulford 5 b. Nov. 17, 1732,d. Feb 3, 1812*; Edward 5 b. 1733, d. 1738; Mehitable 5 b. 1739,(who m. E. Jones;) Edward 5 again b. 1741; Mary 5 b. 1743.*Isaac Mulford 5 was 1st Lieut. of 2nd. Company, 3rd. Regt. ofMinute Men in1776; he m. Ruth Stratton and rem. to Dutchess Co., N.Y. 1783;his dau. Ruth m. Jeremiah Sherrill and they also rem. toDutchess Co. Edward 5 rem. toFishkill, N.Y. 1783."If these dates are correct, then Dr. Edward Hunting, Jr. wouldhave been 37when your Edward was born in 1778.As further evidence, both the 1790 and 1800 Federal Censuses ofNew Yorklist exactly one Edward Hunting - in the Town of Fishkill,Dutchess Co. Forthe 1790 census, the transcription at http://www.ancestry.comlists 1 freewhite male 16 or older, 1 free white female, and 5 other freepersons. From "Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York,AnHistorical and Genealogical Study of all the 18th CenturySettlers in thePatent" by Frank J. Doherty, Pleasant Valley, New York 12569,1990., p. 132:"The 'Poughkeepsie Journal' of 25 Jan. 1797 carried a noticethat a MedicalSociety was to meet in Fishkill on Wednesday, 1st March 1797.The paper of 8 March carried the following: 'At a meeting of anumber ofphysicians in the town of Fishkill on the 1st instant (inpursuance of apublic request) it was agreed to institute a Medical Society tocomprehendthe county of Dutchess. The following persons were chosen acommittee tooriginate a Constitution and by-laws. Ebenezer Cary, JohnThomas, Shadrack Ricketson, James L.
