Weymouth New England Genealogy

In early 1635, John Cogswell sold his "mylls" and other real

property. Soon after, with their amassed fortune, his wife and

their eight children embarked at Bristol on 23 May 1635 for New

England. Among the children were three sons and five of his six

daughters. The Cogswell family brought with them several farm

and household servants, valuable furniture, farming tools,

housekeeping utensils and a goodly amount of money. Due to a

lack of wind,

John Cogswell was granted 300 acres of land at the "further

Chebokoe" in 1636, in addition to two more grants under 10 acres

each. He built a log cabin that same year, a framed house after

a few more years, and spent the rest of his days there. In that

part of Ipswich that is now Essex, Massachusetts, John Cogswell

was the third original settler. He established himself as a man
