Narrative
Captain Sylvester Isaac Hill (1858-1929). A newspaper interviewwith him and printed in a Portland paper in 1927 is SOURCEmaterial in " Stone Sloops"He was son of Captain Reuben and Polly Hamilton Hill. Hemarried Nellie E. Strout. Captain Hill is intimately connectedwith the M.M. HAMILTON for most of his life--first with CaptainReuben, his father, and also Captain John F. Hamilton, hisuncle and controlling owner. Later he owned this sloop himselfand as late as 1916 he was advertising "Sylvester I. Hill,Contractor--Sea Walls and Wharves--Private Stone Landings aspecialty--estimates cheerfully furnished - 12 Commercial Wharf,Portland, Me. - residence Chebeague Island". The granite forthe Washington Monument was freighted by him.
