Narrative
Originally wanted to go into the ministry, following in hisfather's footsteps. However on account of frail health, he wasadvised to go into something involving the out-of-doors.Accordingly he became a civil Engineer, and ended up as one ofthe engineers for the first transcontinental railroad. Despitehis frail health, he proved to be the most rugged of all thoseinvolved in this enterprise. At the age of 14 he was in Washington and happened to sit in thebox next to Lincoln's in the Ford Theater the night of theassassination. He blamed himself for not grabbing Booth's arm todeflect the shot, which he said he could easily have done!
