Narrative

Stephen came to Kennebunk from Newburyport in 174_, and locatedhimself near the Kennebunk River, in the rear of the house ofGeorge Dresser. He was an energetic, enterprising man, andembarked freely in various kinds of business; built a mill onMiddle river, in Arundel, sawed a large amount of lumber, builtand owned coasters, entered into trade, etc. Having acquired arespectable property, he built for himself a large house, thesame now occupied by Dresser. This was constructed with garrisondefenses, the Indian wars not having then ended. In a few yearsthese defenses ceased to be necessary, anf the building wasmodified as it now appears. He was a patriotic and religiousman, in the early part of the Revolution taking a decided standin favor of the rights of the colonies. Immediately on receivingnotice of the battle at Lexington, he started at the head oftwenty-two of his company for the place of conflict; but when hereached Portsmouth, was advised that the troops were not needed, and returned home. He was chosen agent of the town to prosecuteall who were inimical to the State or the United States; was acaptain of the militia in Kennebunk, one of the selectman, andactive member of the Second Church Parish, and for several yearsits treasurer and one of its assessors; also, a leader among thefounders of the church.Being an active business man, he kept his physical powers inreasonable exercise, and thereby lived to an advanced age, dyingMay 24, 1815 (Note: Conflicting Record) in his 94th year.
