Narrative
The Hildreth Collection consists mainly of the nine boundvolumes of letters, documents, and memorabilia of SamuelPrescott Hildreth (1783 - 1863), Marietta physician, geologist,botanist, and amateur historian. The volumes deal primarily withthe early history of the Ohio Valley from 1787 - 1847 and withnatural history and geology. The three volumes of meteorologicalrecords, part of the data from Dr. Hildreth's 40 years ofweather observation, are unique for than time. Of unusualinterest are his journals of disease, 1831-1854. Some of thematerial is included in two of his publications, PioneerHistory, published in 1848, and Biographical and HistoricalMemoirs of the Early Pioneer Settlers of Ohio, published in1852. Also included are books from Dr. Hildreth's own library.
