Narrative
Concerning Jonathan Parker, son of Samuel Parker and AbigailLakin, Mr. Manning's history reveals little more than theinformation found in Caleb Butler's "History of Groton," thatboth he and his wife, Sarah Pierce, died the same day, September21, 1723. This was less than three years after their marriage, and the wife, having been born in 1702, was thus barely of age, while the father was about twenty-five years old. But the realtragedy of this early death of the young couple was that theyleft a little son, Jonathan Parker, Jr., less than two yearsold. The fact that his uncle, Samuel Parker, Jr., was appointedadministrator of the estate while his maternal grandfather,Ephraim Pierce, was appointed guardian, seems to indicate thatthe infant orphan was taken into the home of the latter, inwhich case he was brought up by Mary Whitney, though she hadnine children of her own. She lived until after the boy hadgrown to manhood and was married to Eleanor Hunt, the daughterof Samuel Hunt of Concord.
