Narrative
During World War I, it became difficult to have a Germanic name.Chet had his name legally changed to Chetwood SchwarzkopfThoburn (Chetwood S. Thoburn). Thoburn was the name of hisparents' favorite professor at Stanford University. It waswhile he used this name that he married Donna Meserve. Later, after they divorced, he took back his given name. His sonNorman was grown and had no reason to take the name Schwarzkopf. Thus Norman is a "first-generation Thoburn".Donna and Chet divorced, probably around 1927. In the early1940s, he married Ruth; they divorced in the late 1950s. Laterhe married Mary, who had been his high school sweetheart, andthey were still together in Yucaipa, California, when he died.He had emphysema and moved several times, seeking anenvironment where he could breath more easily. He may neverhave quit smoking, but he certainly cut back.
