r152 David Nelson resided first in Ipswich,MA. After a few yearshe returned to Rowley. By occupation he was a housewright and amiller. He purchased land in 1762 adjoining the Sheepscot Riverin the North Parish of Pownalboro, ME where he was located andassessed in 1763. On this land he erected two sawmills whichbore his name and were known as the Upper and Lower Mills. In1769 his son John and David Plummer purchased a fourth interestin the Upper Mill and on 4 June 1782, David and Mary Nelson soldthe Lower Mill to David and John Plummer. In the same year, thesuccess of the Revolution being assured, David Nelson leftPownalboro for the more exposed settlement on Cape NewagenIsland, then included in Boothbay. There he erected a saw andgrist mill, operated by tidal power, on the south shore ofEbenecook Harbor, now at West South-port. Two years later hesold his remaining interest in the Upper Mill at Pownalboro; andin July of the same year,1784,he disposed of the mill at CapeNewagen, half to Anthony Nelson and half to Samuel Nelson, hissons.In 1794 the North Parish was set off from Pownalboro,ME whichoriginally included also the present towns of Wiscasset andDresden, and was incorporated under the name of New Milford.
