Narrative

(Joseph) Stephen Curit was a source of information for the book"The Stone Sloops of Chebeague". Mr. Curit was born onChebeague in 1858, son of John and Dorothy Estes Curit. Whenhe was a boy, in 1870, the family moved to Yarmouth where hehas since lived. He married Eliza Adelaide Johnson. Heshipped as a cook at the age of 15 and for the next twenty yearsserved aboard the stone sloops Rocky Mountain, Twilight, AnnieMay and Riverside. By the late 1880's and 1890's he was Mateand acting Captain at times. About 1895 he and his cousin hadthe lobster smack-schooner "My Fancy", then Mr. Curit turned tothe land. He evidentlyinherits--Hamilton-Littlefield-Curit-Estes-long lived and hardworkers--at the time the book was compiled he was approaching92--'dug a barrel of clams at one tide at the age of 86 and afew weeks ago (quoted from a letter ) "I just work around thehouse now--during the last eight days I have sawed and splittwo cords of slab wood and put it under cover". He is quite anartist--his paintings of ships are interesting and his shipmodels are fine--he made the model of the stone sloop "AnnieMay" which Mrs. William McCall has in her home on Chebeague. Hemade it in 1920.
