After his wife'sdeath he moved from Acton to Temple, NH about 1775 and livedthere with his eldest son, Deacon John Cragin, until his death. The History of the Acton Arboretum Herb Garden - In 1976-77 theTown of Acton purchased 53 acres of conservation landrepresenting a variety of natural habitats including deep woods, meadows, swampland, a pond, an old apple orchard and a glacialesker. In 1986 an amended town article specified that the landbe used for The Acton Arboretum. In 1989 and invitation wasextended to the Acton Garden Club to research and develop aperiod herb garden in a historical foundation on the site. The land where the foundation in located was owned by the ReedFamily prior to the Revolutionary War. The Tuttles later put inan orchard and John Cragin eventually built a house, assumed tohave been located on the foundation visible from Taylor Road. After the house was moved, a shed was built to store the orchardand farming equipment. The shed burned down in the 1960's.At the March meeting of 1738 John Cragin was appointed caretakerof the meeting house and became therewith Acton's first janitor,or sexton, as one may choose.
