Narrative

r152 Near the stone marking the resting place of Hannah Nelson,is the stone of her husband, inscribed: Joseph Nelson, died Feb.8,1743-4 aged 61. This stone was erectedAug.1857, by Sylvanus Nelson, his great grand-son. ....................... Joseph Nelson lived first in a house that was later owned andoccupied by Jacob F.Jewett in 1867. This house is located onwhat is now called the Georgetown and Rowley Road or Eastt MainSt. in the Malborroh District, Georgetown,MA. The Brocklebankhouse is considered as the oldest house in Georgetown and the"Jewett House"is the second oldest and is occupied as a summerhome by Mr.William Otis Kimball, a Boston Banker. Henry M.Nelson, Georgetown, recorded that this house was built by JosephNelson about 1700. As Joseph was only 18 years old then, Cora Turner thought he probably built it in 1704, the yearbefore he married in the following spring. Mrs.William OtisKimball stated on 15 October 1929 that Sidney Perley, late ofSalem,MA had said that the house was built in 1600 and something- previous to 1700 on account of some crooked timbers that wereused in the construction and that no house with such timbers wasbuilt after 1700. She also stated that Sidney Perley told herthat Joseph Nelson did not build the house but bought it of anEdward Hazen in 1704. She did state that it was located on landthat had been known as the "3,000 acres" and that the originalboundary had not been changed from the time that Joseph Nelsonwas possessed of the land and buildings. Cora says that Mrs.W.OKimball is a Southern woman who has removed North since theCivil War and has been very much interested in owning N.E.antiques. A few years a head of someone else means a great dealto her. .......................... The Church (Congregational) of the Rowley Second Parish or whatbecame the First Church of Georgetown was located on the "Green"in the three cornered place between Elm St. and West Main St.opposite the old Capt.Samuel Brocklebank house. This church wasdone away with about the time the Rev.Charles Beecher (brotherof Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe) was pastor andresided in the Brocklebank house. Joseph Nelson built the housewhere he probably spent the last of his days with his sonJoseph, to whom he gave the house and about thirty acres ofland, said house being owned and occupied by Sylvanus Nelson, his great-great grandson in 1867. This property was located onElm St., near Nelson St. in what became Georgetown. This housewas owned by Daniel Bond in 1913 and passed to Mrs.J.H.Heathcock of Lowell (a neice) in 1932.
