Narrative

WILLIAM WHITING, one of the early settlers of Hartford, ismentioned in the histories of this country as early as 1632 or3. Between 1631 and 1633, "The Bristol men had sold theirinterest in Piscataqua, to the Lords Say and Brooke, GeorgeWyllys and William Whiting, who continued Thomas Wiggin theiragent, &c." Mr. Whiting retained his interest in Piscataqua tillhis death. He was "one of the most respectable of the settlers in 1636"--"one of the civil and religious Fathers of Connecticut," a manof wealth and education, styled in the records "William Whiting,Gentleman." In 1642 he was chosen one of the Magistrates; 1641,Treasurer of the Colony, which office he retained till hisdeath. In 1646 "a plot was laid by Sequasson, Sachem of theNaticks, to kill Governors Haynes and Hopkins and Mr. Whiting,on account of the just and faithful protection which thesegentlemen had afforded to Uncas. The plot was made known by afriendly Indian and the danger averted." He bore the title of Major in 1647. William Whiting died July, 1647.(*) [His widow, Susannah, married, 1650, Mr. Samuel Fitch, ofHartford, by whom she had two sons. Mr. Fitch died 1659, and shemarried 3. Mr. Alexander Bryan, of Milford. She died atMiddletown, at the house of her daughter, Mrs. Collins, and wasburied there July 8, 1673.] FIRST GENERATION.Children,--of William Whiting and Susannah.I.
