Narrative

r152 In April,1722, Gershom Nelson bought of Josiah Wood hislarge farm of some 200 acres, lying mainly just south of theElder John Jones Estate in that part of Mendon which was made adistinct town on 11 April 1780, known as Milford and in thatpart of Milford set off as Hopedale though extending fartherboth east and west. Hopedale was set off on 7 April 1886. Mr.Nelson was evidently a man of means, energy and enterprise. Heat once removed his family from Rowley. Josiah Wood bought thebulk of this real estate of Capt. Seth Chapin, the originalsettler, in 1715, but had made some additions to it, and inpartnership with certain neighbors, erected a saw mill on itssoutherly side. The scant remains of the old dam were stilldiscernible (1882) on the river, about half way down from theMendon-road stone bridge towards the new mill which in 1882 wasin the posession of Samuel Walker.Gershom Nelson married a woman from another family who wereoriginal settlers in Rowley. They had seven children in Rowleyand then moved to a large farm in Milford, Massachusetts nearthe Rhode Island border. Other relatives also moved to this areaand it became a significantsecond settlement of Nelsons. Towns in which they lived werethen or later became, Upton, Mendon, Hopedale, Sutton, Milfordand Uxbridge. The Nelsons, in addition to farming, broughtmilling and weaving skills to this area.
