Narrative

John Cary, son of John, Sec. 1, b. Duxbury, Nov. 4, 1645; m.Abigail, dau. of Samuel Allen and his second wife, Margaret(French) (Lamb), at Bridgewater, Dec. 7, 1670. In 1680 heremoved to Bristol, where he resided till his death in 1721. Thedeed to his land in Bristol was granted Sept. 14, 1680, andconfirmed by the General Court, Sept. 29, 1680. The firstmeeting of the people and the naming of the town was Sept. 1,1681, and John Cary and his brother David were present. Hebecame a prominent man in the town, and was elected a Deacon ofthe church at its organization, and held the office till hisdeath. He was one of the first "raters" of the town, andappointed Nov. 10, 1681; in 1693 was recording officer of theCounty, and Clerk of the peace; in 1694 was Representative tothe General Court. His wife was also of good family; her father,Samuel Allen, came from Bridgewater, Eng., to Braintree in 1630;in 1635 he took the oath of allegiance, and was Town Clerk,Selectman, Surveyor of highways, Constable, and served as Deputythree times. He and his son Samuel, who settled in Bridgewaterin 1660, both fought in King Philip's War. For eight generationsthis family has been identified with the best political andreligious life of New England. He d. July 14, 1721, his estate amounting to 700 pounds; thewill of his wife was recorded in 1729. Children: I. John, b. Bridgewater, Nov. 6, 1671, d. in infancy. II. Seth, b. Bridgewater, Jan. 28, 1672-3. Bridgewater, June 10, 1680. Sec. 10. VII. Benjamin, b. Bristol, Aug. 29, 1681. Sec. 11. VIII. Elizabeth, b. May 23, 1683; m. Ephraim Kidder. IX. Abigail, b. Aug. 31, 1684; m. Samuel Howland, May 6, 1708,and had ten children, and the posterity is very numerous andwidely scattered; Capt. William Pearse, who d. at Bristol inFeb. 1867, at the age of 95, was a grandson of Abigail. X. Josiah, b. May 6, 1686. Sec. 12. XI. Timothy, b. Feb. 15, 1687-8.
