Narrative

r2 She emigrated on 15 Apr 1635 from Shotley, Suffolks, England.Beginning after 1640 Elizabeth Stratton and John Thorndike hadthe following children: Mary, Elizabeth, Hannah, John, Paul,Martha & Herbert at probably at, Salem, Essex, MA. There is no trace of the members of the Stratton family who, aswe learn from their wills, were laid to rest within the churchat Shotley. Their only surviving monument in the parish is theancient Manor House, still known as Kirkton Hall, and a fewentries in what remain of the earlier parish registers. Allrecords prior to 1571 are lost. Kirkton Hall is in all probability the one referred to in theStratton wills as the family residence, although little of thepresent building is of earlier date than 1630. Kirkton Manor isstill called by that name. It appears to have come into thepossession of the Strattons through the marriage of Isabell, daughter and heiress of Sir William Loudham, with one of theearly Strattons of Levington. The eldest son of this marriage,Walter de Stratton, died seized of the Manor in 1392. He was theimmediate progenitor of the Stratton family of Shotley inSuffolk, who held Manor until about 1627, when it was sold byAnn Stratton, relict of John Stratton of Ardleigh, and her sonJohn. The present owner is Mr. Berners of Woolverstone, whokindly sent the compiler the picture of Shotley or Kirkton Hallshown on p. 48 in Stratton Book. Also shown on same page is ancient Stratton Hallor Kirkton Manor. Following are some records found of family: Sir William de Loudham, Knight, died 50th of Edward III, 1376.
