Narrative

(Letter on file in the Minnesota Historical soc. dept ofHennepin Paper Mills to Jeanne Loeb, g-grandaughter of John W.Shepard);"In regards to your request for information on the ShepardFamily, enclosed are copies of all that I could find in ourarchives. (You may want to write the historical society to seewhat is in their file - The Morrison County Historical Society -PO Box 239, Little Falls, MN 56345) The name of Frank H. Shepardcame as no surprise to me as I well remember researching histenure as superintendent at Hennepin paper mill when I wrotethat company's history a few years ago. However, a thoroughsearch of old newspapers has revealed that his parents did notdie here in Little Falls or Morrison County and found that JohnShepard died near Spokane, Washington, and was buried inMinneapolis. (note; actually buried in Plainwell, MI) Enclosedare copies of what I did find, along with a copy of thatHennepin Paper Company History, and there is a charge of $5. forthose items & postage, payable to the Morrison County HistoricalSociety (we do not charge a research fee but accept donationspayable to same).Enclosed are the following copies: Obituary for John Shepard, transcribed from microfilm of Little Falls Herald, August 15,1902 (our microfilm reader doesn't make copies and we aremissing Aug. 1902 papers for the local daily newspaper), andnote that he died on a ranch near Spokane and was buried in Minneapolis; copies from the Little Falls Daily Transcriptregarding Frank Shepard and his son Charles during tenure atHennepin Paper Co., from March 29, August 21, and Aug. 23, 1897;Jan. 20, 1899, July 20, 1901, Jan. 27 & 28, and June 12, 1902;and copy of Hennepin Paper Co. History (Frank is on pages 14 to 20). I searched all the January to June 1902 volumes wehave of the Daily Transcript but found no other Shepard items. From these items it appears that Frank came to Little Falls fromSparta, Wisc., in March 1897; Frank and son Charles worked atHennepin until late January, 1902, when Charles is leaving forMontana where Frank's wife had already moved-Frank was replacedas Hennepin's' superintendent by the end of January, 1902, and he moved--with family--sometime soon after toFairchild, Washington; Frank had taken charge of a paper mill inFloriston, California, by June, 1902; his father died in August1902 near Spokane, Washington. I did not find any other itemsregarding John Shepard's death, and made a very through search of the January-Feb.-March newspapers of 1902 butfound no obit for Margaret Harper Shepard, but assume she mayalso be buried in Michigan near her husband (I have no ideawhich cemetery in Michigan that John was buried in). I have notseen the Verbal family history but it is surely in error. I hope this information will be of help to you with yourresearch, and if you need any further assistance, feel free tocontact us again at any time."
