An Ambrose Davenport was in the Williamsburg area in the 1780's,subsequently was in the Richmond area, then enlisted in theU.S.Army, took his discharge in the Michigan Territory andsettled on Mackinac Island. Clearly he was not one of thearistocratic York County Davenports, nor was he a son of CaptainWilliam Davenport of Isle of Wight County ( who was murdered bythe Creek Indians in 1786). By proximity and social status, hewas most near and like Martin Davenport, Jr., of Hanover andHenrico Counties.
