Narrative
Robert Bartlett died at Plymouth between 19/29 Sept., 1676, thedate of his nuncupative will, and 29 Oct./8 Nov., 1676, the dayhis will was probated. His widow was living 3/23 Febry 1677/8,as shown by her deed of that date to her son Joseph. She diedbefore the deed from her sons Benjamin and Joseph to WilliamHarlow, Jr., made some time in 1683.Robert Bartlett was called a cooper in 1654 in a deed fromSamuel Hicks, and in the five deeds signed by him after thatdate he is called either "cooper" or "wine cooper." He wasevidently a man of good standing and highly respected, but wasnever dignified by the title "Mr.", and his public services werelimited to occasional duty as a member of the grand jury,frequent service on trial juries, and several terms as surveyorof highways.Robert Bartlett's name appears in the earliest list of freemenof Plymouth, dated 1633, and in the tax lists of 1633 and 1634his rate was nine shillings. [C. O., I: 1a, 10, 62]In 1633 and 1636 he had mowing ground with Mrs. Warren. [M. D.,III:47]On 28 May/7 June, 1635, his brother-in-law Thomas Little gavehim land beyond Eel River on which to build a house. [C. O., I:79]On 1/11 Dec., 1635, Richard Stinnings bound himself as anapprentice to Robert Bartlett for nine years. At the end of thisterm he was to receive two suits of apparel and £3 in money orgoods. [C. O., I: 81]In the earliest entry of cattle marks in the Plymouth townrecords, made in 1636 or 1637, Robert Bartlett's are recorded asfollows: (worn) "Bartlet a peece cut out of the right earebefore and (worn)ece out of the left eare behind." [T. R., I: 1]His name appears in the list of freemen dated 7/17 March,1636/7, and on the same date he is mentioned in an order ofCourt as a son-in-law of Mrs. Warren. [C. O., I: 105, & M. D.,III: 48]At a general meeting held 20/30 March, 1636/7, the followingassignment of hay grounds was made:To Richard Church Robte Bartlet & Thomas Little hey ground wherethey had the last yeare, and to take further supply where theycan fynd yt in placs not graunted to others, and Robte Bartletto have the Swampe or Pitt at the head of mr Bradfords ground.[C. O., 1: 11 1]Robert Bartlett was one of the jury appointed 2/12 May, 1637, toestablish highways about Plymouth, Duxbury and Eel River. On9/19 May they took oath before Gov. Bradford and the next dayperformed their duties. Their report was made to the Court 7/17July, 1637. The Eel River road passed west of Robert Bartlett'shouse. [C. O., I: 113, 114]On 4/14 Dec., 1637, land at Eel River was ordered Layed out toThomas Clark so it would be least prejudicial to Robert Bartlettand others. [M. D., III: 48]On 7/17 Feb'y, 1637/8, Mrs. Warren gave to John Cooke, husbandof her daughter Sarah,one lot of land lying at the Eele River containeing eighteeneacrees or there abouts and lying on the North side of RobertBartletts lott formrly also given the said Robert in Marriagewth Mary another of the sd mrs Warrens Daughters wch said lottis to begin at the heigh way and so to goe in lengh & breadthwth the said Roberts lott together wth a heigh way from the saidlott to the water side if it be Demaunded or requested [Col.Deeds, 1: 11: 30]On 11/21 Nov., 1638,* John Cooke gave the land just mentioned toRobert Bartlett in return for a like amount at Duxbury lyittgbetween the lots of Thomas Morton and Jonathan Brewster. [Col.Deeds, I: II: 32]On 4/14 Aug., 1638, in consideration of £6, 10s. sterling paiddown, and twenty bushels of corn to be paid the next* The record is "1637", but the date of Mrs. Warren's conveyancetaken in connection with the dates of other records precedingand following this one show that an error was made in the year.March, John Barnes made over to Robert Bartlett the unexpiredtime of his servant Thomas Shreeve. Thomas was to serve until1/11 Aug., 1641, the end of his term, for £3, 6s. 8d. per year,and he agreed to serve an additional year for £5. [Col. Deeds,1: 11: 40]On 1/11 Dec., 1638, Robert Bartlett hired Edward Shaw for oneyear, for £8, 10s. sterling. [C. O., 1: 177]His name appears in a list of freemen made in 1639.* [Lists Fr.,2]On 3/13 Dec., 1639, he was sued for a debt by John Atwood andwas obliged to pay him £6, 1s. 6d. [J. A., 9]On 5/15 May, 1640, he was granted an enlargement of his lottoward the Pine Hills. [M. D., III: 48]At the General Court held 2/12 June, 1640, the grand inquestpresented "all whome it may concerne" for not building a bridgeat Eel River according to order. On the margin of the record isthe following entry: "The ele river people is to build a bridgthere & 50s repayd to Rich: Church & Robr Bartlet." [C. O., I:239]Robert Bartlett's name appears in a list dated 30 Nov./10 Dec.,1640, but the purpose of the list is not clear. [C. O., I: 250]He was a member of the jury in the case of John Gilbert, Jr.,vs. Mr. Francis Doughty, 6/16 June, 1643. [J. A., 24]His name appears in the list of those able to bear arms, betweenthe ages of sixteen and sixty, in August, 1643. [Lists Fr., 30]Under date of 29 Aug./8 Sept., 1643, is recorded the settlementof a dispute between Mr. William Thomas and William Newland,regarding the sum of £4, 10s. which the former undertook to payto Richard Church and Robert Bartlett in behalf of the town ofMarshfield. [C. O., II: 86]On 5/15 June, 1644, Robert Bartlett was chosen a member of thegrand inquest, and the same day Manasseh Kempton, Edward Bangsand Robert Bartlett were ordered by the Court to appraise twooxen belonging to William Powell which had been seized for debtsto Thomas Clarke and Clement Campion. [C. O., II: 100, 101]The town of Plymouth voted, 22 June/2 July, 1644, that in caseof an alarm in time of danger companies should assemble atvarious places, and Robert Bartlett was assigned to the EelRiver company. [T. R., I: 27]* This date was printed "1633" in Plym. Col. Rcds., Boston,1857, Vol. VIII, p. 174, but a careful examination of theoriginal discloses the error. The date "1639" is also confirmedby the governor and list of assistants given, which agrees withnone but that for the year 1639. He was chosen surveyor ofhighways for Plymouth, 4/14 June, 1645. [C. O., II: 115]He was on the jury 28 Oct./7 Nov., 1654 1645, in the cases ofNathaniel Bowman vs. Morris Truant, and Roger Cooke and WilliamLatham vs. John and Ann Barker. [J. A., 29]On 2/12 June, 1646, he was again chosen a member of the grandinquest. [C. O., II: 137]His name appears in two lists of Plymouth townsmen, one dated10/20 Dec., 1646, the other undated, but apparently made between1648 and 1659. [T. R., I: 31, 34]On 7/17 June, 1648, he served on the jury in the trial of a partof the cases which came before that Court. [C. O., II: 168]On Thursday, 8/18 June, 1648, Robert Bartlett's daughter Lydiawas born at Plymouth. [Col. M. B. B., 2]His team is mentioned in a list of teams, and men assigned toeach, for drawing wood; but part of the leaf is missing and thepurpose is not clear. The date is also missing, but it wasprobably between 1648 and 1652.[Plym. T. R., I: 44]On 9/19 April, 1649, Richard Church sold his house and land atEel River to Robert Bartlett for £25, to be paid as follows: £8,10s. in a red ox called "Mouse," £6 in goods at Mr. Paddy's andthe remainder in the latter part of September, 1650, either incattle, corn or merchants pay. [Col. Deeds, I: II: 271]On 17/27 May, 1649, he was again chosen a member of the grandjury. [Plym. T. R., I: 39]On .Thursday, 20/30 Dec., 1649, Robert Bartlett's daughterRebecca was married at Plymouth to William Harlow. [Col. M. B.B., 8]Robert Bartlett served on the jury 6/16 March, 1649/50, in thetrial of two cases, William Hedge vs. Robert Nash, and EdwardDoty vs. John Shaw, Jr. [J. A., 35]On Sunday, 10/20 March, 1650/1, his daughter Mercy was born atPlymouth. [Col. M. B. B., 11]Under date of February, 1651/2, he was recorded as having killedtwo wolves, but the entry was crossed out.[Plym. T. R., 1: 43]In March, 1651, Robert Bartlett was recorded as one of theproprietors of the Plymouth lands at Punckateesett (now LittleCompton, R. I.), and on 22 March/1 April, 1663/4, he and JamesCole, Sr., were entered as owners of the twenty-fourth lot. On8/18 March, 1668/9, Robert Bartlett, "cooper," sold his interestin this lot, for £3, to Mr. John Almy, merchant, of Portsmouth,R. I. [Plym. T. R., I: 47, 71, & Col. Deeds, III, 328]On Wednesday, 10/20 Sept., 1651, his daughter Mary was marriedat Plymouth to Richard Foster. [Col M. B. B., 14]He was chosen a member of the grand inquest 3/13 June, 1652. [C.O., III: 7]The next day, 4/14 June, 1652, Robert Bartlett, Thomas Clarke,Richard Church, Nathaniel Warren and Joseph Warren complainedagainst the towns of Yarmouth, Barnstable and Sandwich fornon-performance of a Court order to build a bridge over EelRiver. [J. A., 47]On 2/12 Aug., 1652, Thomas Little sold to Richard Foster landnext to Robert Bartlett's. [M. D., I: 98]On 7/17 Oct., 1652, Robert Bartlett petitioned the Court tosettle a dispute concerning land given him by Mrs. Warren. Thedecision confirming his rights was printed in full on page 49 ofthis volume. This petition is referred to in the bond ofElizabeth Warren, Jane Collier and Nathaniel Warren dated 11/21June, 1653. [M. D., 2:64]On 7/17 March, 1652/3, he became one of the purchasers of whatwas afterwards called Dartmouth. [Col. A., 55, 58, 60]Robert Bartlett, "wine cooper," on 30 Janry/ 9 Febry 1653/4,bought of Samuel Hicks eleven acres of land on the south side ofthe town, lying on the bay, but was not to take possession until15/25 Oct. 1654. [Col. Deeds, II: I: 97]On 5/15 June, 1655, he brought suit against Thomas Pope forkilling a sow, and recovered eighteen shillings. [J. A., 62]He was a member of the grand inquest 8/18 June, 1655. [C. O.,III : 77]On Tuesday, 23 Dec./2 Janry 1656/7, his daughter Sarah wasmarried to Samuel2 Rider Samuell, of Plymouth. [Col. M. B. B.,19]His name is in a list of freemen of the town of Plymouth, madeabout 1658. [Lists Fr., 44]At the General Court held 1/11 June, 1658, Lieut. Southworth,John Dunham, Sr., Robert Finney, John Barnes and Thomas Popewere appointed to determine the range between the lands on whichNathaniel Warren and Robert Bartlett lived. [C. O., III: 137]Robert Bartlett was on the jury in several cases tried 3/13 May,1659. [J. A., 81]On 27 June/7 July, 1659, Robert Bartlett took a lease for tenyears of the lands of his late son-in-law Richard Foster,agreeing to pay the latter's son Benjamin Foster, then aged"foure yeares or therabouts," the sum of £8 when he came of age.On the same day the widow Mary Foster and Jonathan Morey made anante-nuptial agreement about bringing up the child Benjamin. Oneof the conditions was that, if Mary died before Jonathan,Benjamin should be at the disposal of Robert Bartlett, BenjaminBartlett or William Harlow. [Col. Deeds, II: II: 28]On Friday, 8/18 July, 1659, the widow Mary Foster and JonathanMorey were married at Plymouth. [Col. M. B. B., 25]On 1/11 May, 1660, Robert Bartlett was brought before the Courtfor speaking contemptuously of the ordinance of singing psalms.On acknowledging his error and promising not to do so again hewas admonished and discharged, being required to acknowledge hisfault to the persons to whom he had so spoken. [C. O., III: 188]On 24 May/3 June, 1660, the town granted forty acres at ShiftingCove to three Indians and appointed George Watson, RobertBartlett, Nathaniel Warren and William Cooke to lay it out. [T.R., I: 50]On 3/13 Sept. 1660, the town granted Robert Bartlett fifty acresbetween the sea and the fern swamp between Eel River and ManometPonds, and 20 Febry/2 March, 1662/3, the bounds of the grantwere recorded. [T. R., I: 52, 62]On 4/14 June, 1661, he was chosen surveyor of highways forPlymouth. [C. O., III: 229]On Thursday, 26 Dec./5 Janry 1661/2, his daughter Elizabeth wasmarried to Anthony Sprague. [Col. M. B. B., 27]Robert Bartlett laid claim to meadow land near the Sandwichline, but the grant had not been recorded by the Court, so thetown, on 30 Dec./8 Janry 1663/4, granted him eight acres ofmeadow there, which had formerly been mowed by Thomas Butler.The town clerk evidently intended to make sure that this grantwas on the records, for he entered it on two different pages.[T. R., I: 63, 67]At a town meeting held 26 Janry/5 Febry 1663/4, he was grantedan extension of his lot for a quarter of a mile towards the pinehills. At the same meeting Nathaniel and Joseph Warren wereappointed to settle a dispute about lands between RobertBartlett and Hugh Cole. [T. R., I: 65]At a town meeting held in February, 1663/4, the town granted tenacres to Robert Bartlett adjoining his meadow that Thomas Butlerhad mowed. [T. R., I: 68]He was granted a piece of swamp next to his meadow at Eel River,by a town meeting in July, 1667. [T. R., I: 84]His wife is called Mary Bartlett, Senior, in the codicil toNathaniel Warren's will, dated 16/26 July, 1667. [M. I., on 17/27 Febry 1670/1, for £50 currentsilver money, "one Moyety or halfe in Deale" of his share ofland at Acushena in Dartmouth, also "one Moyety or halfe inDeale" of a share at Pascomansucke in Dartmouth, reserving tohimself one third of the last named share, "which said severallshares of land are a prte of the Purchasers land (Comonly soecalled) my selfe being one of the said Purchasers," [Col. D., III: 5 1]On Tuesday, 19/29 Sept., 1676, Robert Bartlett made anuncupative will, and died before 29 Oct./8 Nov., 1676, the daythe will was probated. The inventory is recorded as having beentaken "January the 24th 1676" and exhibited in court "the 29thof October 1676." As these dates are both old style one of themmust be wrong, since January, 1676, old style, followed October,1676, old style, and the inventory could not have been exhibitedbefore it was taken. O., V: 152]The latest date on which the records show that Mary (Warren)Bartlett was living is 13/23 Febry 1677/8, when she deeded toher son Joseph all her rights in real and personal propertygiven her by her husband's will or reserved to her in his deedof gift to Joseph. The consideration of this deed was a bond of£300 given by Joseph for the performance of obligations notspecified; but it is certain that one of them must have been hismother's maintenance while she lived. and allthat my one prsell of Meddow; be it more or Lesse lying andbeing upon the said Eelriver; next unto the Meddow of the saidEphraim Morton; and I doe alsoe Bargaine; and sell as aforsaid,unto the aforsaid Joseph Bartlett;
