Narrative

Nathaniel Merrill married, 15 Oct. 1661, Joanna Ninian. The nameis written Ninny in the original record. In Coffin's "History ofNewbury" and Hoyt's "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury" itis given as Kinney, and in Savage's "Genealogical Dictionary" asKenney. There is no record of other Ninnys, Kinneys or Kenneysin Newbury in the early years of the settlement, but there wereKenneys at Salem and elsewhere in the county. Ninian alsoappears as an early family name, but not frequently.Individuals at that time were indifferent with regard to theuniform spelling of family names, and clerks naturally were nomore accurate in making records. General Lewis Merrill wasconvinced that the name was Ninian. Joanna Merrill died 8 Feb.1717/18, aged about 90.
