Narrative

There were among the early settlers of Rhode Island threefamilies who bore precisely the same name, John Greene, and sofar as is known unrelated by birth to each other; one of thesehad its early home at Newport, one at Warwick, and the otherwhich is the subject of this sketch at Quidnesset Neck, in thetown of North Kingston. John Greene, who is supposed to havecome from England and the ancestor of jabez Greene, according toa genealogy published by Prof. Ray Greene Huling in thismagazine No's 2, 3 and 4 of Vol. II, and No. 1 of Vol. III;settled in Naragansett or Quidnesset, called Sen'r, at Wickfordabout 1639, at Quidnesset 1664 and thereafter. Was one of the Thirteen Proprietors who were assured by theGeneral Assemby of Rhode Island during May Session 1671, ofpeaceful possessions of their homes, and took up theirengagement as freemen of Rhode Island, died between 1682 and(probably) 1696, married Joan, who died later than 1682.
