Narrative

Eulogy for Katherine Graham by her daughter, Lally WeymouthIn the first part of her life, she enjoyed being a wife andmother. We were driven to the Safeway regularly. Then, suddenly, our father, Phil Graham, who was the publisher of The WashingtonPost, died. And my mother never doubted for a moment, in spiteof mixed advice, what she would do. She would take his place andlearn to run the business. It's true that in the very beginning she used to practice herspeech to The Washington Post Christmas party over and overagain in our bedroom and make us listen to "Merry Christmas." But ultimately, she found her voice, as many of you know, andthrough the years she grew into the woman and the leader you areall familiar with. . . . I can report to you that her last weeks were full of fun. . . .She was in Southampton with me and my daughter Katharine and mygranddaughter Madeleine. We danced and danced. Then she went offto Sun Valley for Herb Allen's conference of tycoons, which sheabsolutely adored and always looked forward to. . . . In the end, she had the final word when we were in Boise, Idaho. Most people have living wills written for them, but not mymother. She actually . . . wrote her own. Perhaps her words willgive you some comfort, as they did the four of us kids. She wrote that if she were terminally ill and had no expectationof recovery, she did not want to be kept alive by artificialmeans. "Death," my mother wrote, "is as much a reality as birth, growth, maturity and old age. It is the one certainty. I do notfear death."
