Giles Hopkins died in Eastham between 5 March 1688/9 and 16April 1690. His given name was also rendered as Gyles. He m.Plymouth 9 Oct. 1639 Catherine Wheldon, who d. Eastham after 5March 1688/9; undoubtedly dau. of Gabriel Whelden of Malden andYarmouth. Her given name was also rendered as Katherine andCatorne.Giles Hopkins came on the Mayflower with his family. Hevolunteered with his father and brother Caleb to go against thePequot Indians in 1637. He moved from Plymouth to Yarmouth inlate 1638 or early 1639 and prob. met his wife there. Theyoccupied the first house traditionally built by the English onCape Cod below Sandwich. Giles took the oath of fidelity atYarmouth and was named a surveyor of highways there 7 March1642/3. Giles Hopkins of Yarmouth was conveyed 100 acres by hisbrother Caleb 28 Oct. 1644, and not long thereafter Giles movedto Eastham, where he served as highway surveyor in 1660, 1662,and 1671. He was successful in a defamation suit against WilliamLeverich on 3 Oct. 1654 and served on juries in 1667-8. The willof Giles Hopkins of Eastham, dated 19 Jan. 1682, and a codicil,dated 5 March 1688/9, were admitted to probate 16 April 1690.Mentioned were wife Catorne and sons Stephen (executor),William, Caleb, and Joshua in the main will, and the wife andson Stephen in the codicil.
