Narrative

That he did not share the place held by his two brothers inpublic life may perhaps be attributed to the sad fact of theinsanity of his wife, who lost her reason about the year 1660.The story can best be told in the words of William Brownhimself, in his deposition against Susanna Martin used in 1692at the trial of that strong and spirited woman, to whosewitchcraft his demented wife laid her affliction. Concerning thetruth of what is sworn by William Brown concerning his wife, with respect to her being a rational woman before she was sohandled, and of her now present condition, and her so longcontinuance, all that then knew her and now know her can testifyto the truth of it, for she yet remains a miserable creature, ofwhich myself is a witness, signed Robert Pike, Assistant at theWitch Trials in Salem. William Brown was constable of Salisburyin 1675. He was one of many who spoke against Susanna Martin asa witch and she was hung in 1692.
