Narrative

The wife of Dr. Nathaniel Stevens HUNTING happens to be mygreat-great-great-aunt. Her name, originally, was Clara WareCARTER, and they were married October 20, 1891 in Denver. Aletter from Clara to Nathaniel, dated October 30, 1884, evincesthat they were friends and correspondents long before theirmarriage. (This letter is in the possession of my aunt; I hadthe privilege of reading it during a recent visit to her.) Shewas born Nov. 5, 1864 in Winnetka, Illinois, north of Chicago onthe shore of Lake Michigan. He is remembered in my family as a kindly man and a physician ofsome reputation. He was the founder and chief of staff of theQuincy, MA, hospital, and I have had no knowledge of him livinganywhere but Quincy. There, he and Clara lived in a large whitehouse with wisteria hanging over the entrance. (The house hassince been torn down.)He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Watertown, MA, in theMATCHETT family lot. (The MATCHETTs were his wife's mother'sfamily.) His gravestone bears the dates Feb. 18, 1863 and Nov.21, 1937, along with the following dedication:PHYSICIAN AND SURGEONOF QUINCY, MASSACHUSETTSDEARLY LOVED ANDRESPECTED BY ALLA LIFE SPENT IN SERVINGHUMANITY IN HOSPITALSCHOOLS AND CHURCHClara survived him and died Oct. 24, 1963, 12 days short of her99th birthday, in Quincy. She is buried near him in the samelot-beneath a much simpler tombstone. They had no children.--Austin W. Spencerhttp://www.public.asu.edu/~anselmos/
